Avoiding Tech Support Scams: A Guide for Older Adults

Tech support scams illustration

Tech support scams trick people into believing there is something wrong with their computer or device so they will pay for fake help. Older adults are often targeted through phone calls or alarming pop-up messages.

Pop-up warning icon

If a pop-up or caller claims your computer is infected, don't panic. Legitimate tech companies will never contact you unsolicited. Close the pop-up and avoid clicking any links, and hang up on callers who demand access or payment.

If you have concerns about your devices, contact the manufacturer or a trusted IT professional directly using official support channels or phone numbers displayed on suspicious websites or emails.

Help from family icon

Always ask a family member or friend for advice if you’re unsure whether a message is real. Staying skeptical and verifying information can protect you from scammers posing as tech support.
